Advice is Worthless But This Is Priceless

Former Naval Admiral William H. McRaven, ninth commander of U.S.Special Operations had a video that went viral of his commencement address, "Make Your Bed, Change the World."

He begins by saying "If you make your bed the first thing in the morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day, it will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another."

Who can argue with that?

Actually, I can.

Now, before you think I'm just being argumentative and trying to get attention by criticizing a highly respected leader and public figure, hear me out.

I'm not saying his advice isn't freaking good advice.

I'm saying it's freaking good advice for HIM.

And maybe for you and me.

Or maybe not.

We never know what will unlock more of our potential in life until we give it a fair try.

What I do know is there isn't a formula, a set of rules, or hidden secrets that can be applied to all of us.

If you want to change something in yourself, if you want to get better performance from your team, if you need to increase your sales, get a promotion (or anything else) the question isn't "What will work?"

The question is "What will work for YOU?"

Or, "What will work for your team?"

Not only that but what does each individual on your team need that is uniquely designed to work for them?

Answer those questions and you'll see results like never before.

Fail to answer those questions and all you'll get is mediocre results. (If you get that.)

Now you know why I love coaching.

Coaching isn't about applying a formula for success to an individual or a team.

It's about identifying and implementing what will work like gangbusters for a specific person or a specific team.

If you want to know what will work for you on a dramatic level, you need specific, customized insights and understanding. You need a plan just for you, not a plan for the masses. You need a plan just for your team, not for every team out there.

People who succeed on high levels discovered what works for THEM or for their unique team or company.

That's one BIG reason they succeed on the level they do.

    Alan, I found your post so refreshing! I listen to a lot of podcasts and get a lot out of them. That said, more frequently than I want I have to coach myself along through speakers who have their own 'ABC's of success'. The intent is there, but intuitively I think we'd all at least like to believe there's more to us than a single cookie cutter approach addresses. By far! Thanks for being clear on this!
